End of an era...

Well folks, Blood & Blades has come to an end.  Things have come full circle and it is time to move on and start fresh.  I have decided to start a new blog, 24 Hour Game Geek, that will let me talk about a much wider selection of topics then what I feel comfortable discussing here on Blood & Blades.  Thank you for your patronage and I hope you continue to journey with me onward to my new undertaking.

Warma=Hoarding

Hey guys, how is it going?  I'm currently involved in a Summer/Fall Warmachine/Hordes Slow-Grow league and I thought I would share a photo I took last night of my currently full painted Menoth models.

I am pretty happy with what I have gotten finished and while I hope to charge through and get lots more Menoth painted I have several distraction sitting in the wings sniping at me to get my attention.  These include more and new Dust minis, some 40k Imperial Guard allies for 6th Ed, and my Saga/WAB/W&C Saxons to name a very small few.

Hopefully I can keep on the path and will have more to share soon, but I guarantee nothing!

See you guys next time...

Doomed to Fail?

Hey guys, been a while.  Well today I come to you with some sad news.  I have just posted my first two listings ever on ebay... sigh.  Times have been tough for me lately (still can't find a job) so I have had to resort to selling some of my collection to help pay the bills.  So today I put up my Grey Knight/Death Watch army which I haven't touched since last summer and a lot of painted Flesh Tearers painted my MiCho from MiCho Miniatures that I won in a raffle at a Battle for Salvation tournament a few years ago.

The Grey Knights can be found here: GREY KNIGHT/DEATH WATCH

The Flesh Tearers can be found here: FLESH TEARERS

These are just the first of several armies for a few different systems I hope to sell over the next several weeks.

See you guys with some real content including my initial thoughts about 40K 6th Edition shortly.

From http://listentomywords-mom.blogspot,com

So this post is a sort of it response to this post on Bell of Lost Souls:

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2012/06/price-of-wargaming-spring-2012.html

It is also that sort of post no gamer really wants to know, but I did it anyways as I was curious.  First go check out that post on BoLS before continuing here.

I have done the math to compare the cost new for 6 army I have currently including 2 Dust Warfare, 2 Warmachine, 1 40k, and 1 Warhammer Ancient Battles.

First let me say this... How often when building armies do we just build to a fixed point value, say 50pts in warmachine (my preferred point value) and stop?  I have know 2 players (that I know of) in my entire career of playing Warmachine/Hordes that has done this for those two games.  It is more common in GW games (building to 2k as I did here) ad stopping, I have done this myself.  Dust is too new to know if that will be the trend or not but from everything I have seen most people blow right by the 300pt mark to give themselves some flexibility to handle different enemy builds/strategies/ or character mixes (I have with both my armies).

DUST WARFARE
Army 1: Allies - Average Game 300pts/ Total Points 650pts $309
Army 2: Axis - Average Game 300pts/ Total Points 450pts - $267

WARMACHINE
Army 3: Khador - Average Game 50pts/ Total Points 167pts - $985 (5 Warcaster, 1 Battle Engine)
Army 4: Menoth - Average Game 50pts/ Total Points 51pts - $223 (4 Warcasters)

WARHAMMER 40,000
Army 5: Orks - Average Game 2000pts/ Total Points 2000pts - $693

WARHAMMER ANCIENT BATTLES
Army 6: v2 Mid Anglo-Saxons - Average Game 2000pts/ Total Points $2000 - $175

Okay so now lets talk about how the different armies compare.  Is Dust Warefare, Army 1, the Allies are a fare bit high point wise but a good number of the points above 400 are filled by regularly unused characters and a Heavy Walker which I rarely use also (at least right now).  The same goes for the points over 350 for Army 2, the Axis, except all the extra points are in unused characters as I do not own a heavy walker for Axis at this time.  Both of these armies were purchased from scratch recently.

Army 3, Khador, represents the Mk 2 collection I have been building up since Winter of 2010-2011 when I first got back into the game till now.  While this is a fairly large army it still only includes 5 warcasters and does not include 50ish pts of models I am still using from my previous Mk1 Khador army.  Army 4 is the Menoth project I will be doing for the slow grow.  While I have 4 casters listed the components of this army are really for only 3 of the 4, Kreoss, Feora, and Reznik (leaving out the Testament). However I still need another $73 worth of minis before I can field the planned list for these 3 casters at 35/50pt games. The total project cost for my target collection for my Menoth has me spending an additional $500+ more and that does not include a Battle Engine, 3Kreoss, or the Menoth Colossal.

Army 5 and 6 are really the only self contained armies, built to the target point level as both 40K and WAB both lend themselves to fixed list play, do the higher model count necessary to play both armies.  Army 5, Orks for 40k is an all comers tournament list with big squads, 5 vehicles, and several hard hitting units. While the army only features 1 Battle Wagon and no Big Mek, it does include a unit of 10 Nobz with a Painboy and mix of gear, a big unit of Lootaz, a big unit of Stormboyz, and 2 of the new Ork Planes released this past weekend.  The model count for the ork army is 121 models and 5 Vehicles.

Army 6, the WAB saxon army is by far the cheapest, but only thanks to the fact that it is all plastic, made from 6 boxes of Wargames Factory Saxon minis that come 32 models to a box, 4 bags of Old Glory Spear Tips, and some brass rod.  This army is all infantry and is a wapping 171 models strong.

So what does all this info show?  Comparatively, All plastic WAB armies can be cheap but are uncommon, at least at the moment.  The next Cheapest is tied with starter Warmachine/Hordes armies and Dust Warfare armies.  The most expensive of the one shot armies, not unsurprisingly is GW, though warmachine armies as you begin adding additional Warcaster and new models like full units, Cav, additional warjacks, and battle engines to your collections can grow in cost exponentially fast too.

To sum up, of course there will be exceptions to the rule, however for the most part it looks like Dust Warfare wins out on cost, but currently it has the least options army construction wise on how the game is played (2.5 factions out at the moment).  Warmachine, while cheaper to get into then GW, ends up costing around the same amount as a GW army does in the long run, assuming you expand both to allow for more list building options.  That leaves GW games with the highest entry cost to get into, but in the long run it is probably going to be just as expensive as warmachine or hordes is to play.

WAB, while the cheapest in this comparison, is the exception to the rule in this case.  Usually WAB armies are a high precentage metal and are probably to hardest to find games for of all for 4 game types listed.  Also the branch of GW the produces WAB just closed its doors a few weeks ago and so the rules, at least as official WAB rules go, are no longer being supported.

If anyone wants I can post full list of models for all these armies as required.

These are the voyages of the...

Hey guys, Huron here.  Wow it has been a while.  So things have been kind of rough in the unemployed world of me.  Almost moved to NJ for job (I didn't get it, but I was apartment hunting and making plans when they told me they decided not to hire me, BAH!).  Well anyways I have been busy running a Warmachine League and Painting contest at my local shop, Huzzah Hobbies.  Both will be ending Tuesday April 17th.  I am also in the process of throwing a bit of money together to try and attend Adepticon.  I have a friend going who has asked me to go with him.  More on that is I end up being able to go.

Colossals... Uh Wa?!?!?

Well so big news out of Templecon this past weekend, this summer Colossals will be released for Warmachine.  Now for those of your who love the Warmachine back story like I do, no these are not old Colossals from the past that have been refurbished and put back into service, these are new Colossals that have secretly been in productions by nations all over the Iron Kingdoms for years (in planning since Superiority supposedly).  For the uninitiated (Why aren't you?!?) Colossals will be the equivalent to around Stompa or Knight Titan power levels for 40K.

Bah Bah Stormraven!

Hey Guys, Huron here again.  Well last month for a joint motivational thread on a forum I post on regularly, The Painted Dragon, I decided to paint a Blood Angels Stormraven that I had sitting around.  I started working on it and found it to be a total nightmare.  The kit must have been warped as nothing went together right.  I ended up having to glue this bad boy shut and then still head to spend several days filling gaps in the body and fixing cracks and damage cause by all the excess glue I had to use to get it to say together.  Thank god for Liquid Green Stuff.

Well after a bit of work I finally got this bad boy ready for prime and paint.

40k Hopefuls, #2

Hey guys, Huron here again.  Time to let you in on what the above minis is for in my second 40K Hopefuls of 2012 post.  Last November I posted a couple of WIP preview shots of this guy with a slightly different base, a Mk5 marine, and a finecast jump pack chaplain with a FW Pre-Heresy jump pack.  Well those were the first models of what I thought at the time was going to be pre-heresy Dark Angels army.  Well things ebbed an flowed and while I ended up ditching the Dark Angels idea, trying and failing to paint a squad as Hersey World Eaters, I still continue to gather up minis for this army a bit at a time.  To be honest I already had quite a size able cache of FW bits that I have been buying from both Forge World as well as an UK bits site called bitsandkits.co.uk.  Bits and Kits is a cool because form time to time they stocks up on FW bits and you can bits order individual pieces.  Not the most cost effective way of doing things but if all you want is Lugft Huron's body, an Astral claw shoulder pad, or a single FW Hersey style Missile Launcher, the price is pretty nice.

So now that I am talking about what 40k armies I want to work on this year, I though I'd share with you what I have built so far.  Here is a pic of the full army at this time.

More pics below.

40K Hopefuls, #1

Hey guys, Huron here.  Well we are starting to get close to the end of the first month of 2012 and it is time for me to get to work on figuring our which 40k army will be my promised 2K army in 2012 from my new years goals post.  I have lots of armies to chose from here: perhaps one of the several marine armies I have mentioned previously; Orks in a variety of styles; or how about the Forge World Renegade IG I have sitting around primed or partially painted.  Another choice could be Nurgle Chaos Daemons, I have 1200pts painted already plus another 1k+ sitting ready to paint. All I'd need to buy is 5 more plague bearers and Epidemius to complete the army.

To help me decide, I am going to spend the next week sharing with you several of my choices and then putting a poll together to see what you guys think. No guarantee that I will play along, but it should help me decide.  My choice for today is:

DEATH GUARD

pIrusk Alt, Final

Hey guys, Huron here.  Well pIrusk is all finished though I might go in with some weathering powder in the future and hit up his base, boots, and the bottom edge of the camo green coat.

pIrusk Alt, WIP

Hey guys, here are some pics of the model I have spent most of 2012 so far working on, pIrusk (plain Irusk, or v1 Irusk).  This model is an alt sculpt that was release back when the Mk2 Khador Army Book was released.  I have one of the original pIrusk models that I painted way back in the day but I have recently been trying to focus on playing more Warmachine and nothing helps me do this then painting up some new minis to use.  Also one of my personal New Years resolutions is to play more Mk2 games with a wider variety of models and getting pIrusk painted up is a step in helping to achieve that.

First Minis of 2012

Alright, so time to post the first minis of the new year.  Today I have some Sanguinary Guard for you, still WIP, but first the story of their inspiration.  Back in early December, as I mention in my last post, I played in and won a 40k tournament at my local shop.  The funny thing is I decided to play in the tournament on a whim the morning of the tournament and threw together an all foot Blood Angels army (well all foot except 1 landspeeder, 3 bikes, and a Drop Pod) from the mostly painted BA minis I have kicking around with a few Painted Flesh Tearer minis I won at a BFS charity Tournament back in late 2010 thrown in.  The tournament was a 3 round escalating format with Round 1 played at 1250pts, Round 2 played at 1500pts, and round 3 played at 1750pts.  Players were required to make a 1750pt list and then take whole unit out of it to build their 1500pt and 1250pt lists.

2011 recap, 2012 Goals

Hey guys, 2011 has gone and we are now firmly in 2012.  2011 was a pretty bad year for me health wise and this in turn effected my hobby greatly.  For starters, I only posted a grand total of 21 blog posts over all of 2011 which is way below half of any previous year.  Last year saw me return to 3 games I had played previous but I had been on hiatus with for a while (Malifaux, Warhammer Fantasy, and Warmachine) and expand my interests in a fairly new game for me (Flames of War).  Of these 4 games I quick lost interest in both Malifaux and Warhammer Fantasy, and ended up abandoning Malifaux all together selling all my models except 1 painted Crew (Victorias) and a few random models here and there.

Upgrade Now Complete!

Well looks like I am all done upgrading the site, only took all night.  New Banner, new look, even a new Avatar.  Now where to begin?  Hmm...

Under Construction

Hey guys Huron here again.  I know I have been absent of late, between health issues, being laid off in October, and serious hit to the fail in my painting skills in November hobby has taken sort of a back seat to real life in the second half of 2011.  I have still been building, priming, and slapping some paint around but have had nothing finished or that I was happy enough with to share.  Well 2012 is here and time to get myself out of the rut and get some things painted and some outstanding project completed.

Please excuse the mess while I revamp and reorganize in preparation for a new year of Blogging.
